PDX Jazz Festival 2012

 

PDX Jazz FestivalPDX Jazz Festival 2012 Portland Jazz Festival will be held Friday, February 17 through Sunday, February 26 at venues throughout Portland. The 9th annual 11 day festival will include jazz education and outreach along with a series of concerts featuring an eclectic mix of internationally recognized and local musicians playing a wide-range of jazz styles.

Among this year's headliners are esteemed saxophonist Branford Marsalis and the prolific pianist Joey Calderazzo, playing songs off their latest album, Songs of Mirth and Melancholy; legendary drummer and NEA Jazz Master Roy Haynes, who has played with some of the most decorated names in jazz over the past 60 years and continues to "Snap Crackle at 86" and GRAMMY® Award winning singer Dee Dee Bridgewater, who will return to Portland (she last played the festival in 2006) performing the timeless songs of Billie Holiday.

Jazz in the Twin Cities is on firah! Musicians smoke even in the winter time when the temperatures drop down to double digits below zero..Venues such as the the Dakota Jazz Club, Orchestra Hall, and The Artist's Quarter bring in a myriad of stellar talent year round, Local festivals add to the excitement during the summer months.

The Selby Avenue Jazz Festival is also building community partnerships and a reputation for hosting a jubliant one-day music festival.  Celebrating its tenth year, The Selby Avenue Jazz Festival is scheduled to take place on  Saturday, September 10, 2011 from 11 am to 7 pm in St. Paul, MN."The Selby and Rondo neighborhoods have always had a wonderful history that revolves around family, community and togetherness. Folks just simply needed a way to rekindle that spirit," states Mychael Wright, Festival Producer and Owner of Golden Thyme Coffee Cafe.

Selby Avenue Jazz Festival 2011 talent  lineup includes two-time Grammy nominated saxophonist Gerald Albright, Dick and Jane's Brass Band, Walker West Music Acamedy, Les-Ham Community Band and latin jazz orchestra Salsa Del Soul.

In addition to jazz, community participants such as Major Taylor Cycling Club of Minnesota will host a ride in conjunction with the Selby Ave Jazz Festival in St. Paul to promote African-American men's health. The event is a  fundraising ride with a $25 minimum contribution needed to participate. Funds raised will go to assist a member/family of the community that is dealing with health issues. There will be free t-shirts and snacks. The meeting time is 8:30 am at the corner of Selby and Milton, the ride leaves at 9 am and it will be approx 20 miles. Satchmo SummerFest 2011

Satchmo Summer FestivalIt wouldn't be New Orleans without a festival. What better music festival is there than one paying tribute to Loouis Armstrong? The Satchmo Summer Fest featuring free live local music takes place at the Old U.S. Mint August 4 - 7, 2011.

The festival features traditional jazz, contemporary jazz, brass bands and children's programming. A sampling of performers who play the Satchmo SummerFestival include: Leroy Jones, Jeremy Davenport, Connie Jones' Crescent City Jazz Band, Yoshio Toyama and the Dixie Saints, The Palmetto Bug Stompers, Shamarr Allen, Rebirth Brass Band, Tim Laughlin, Soul Rebels, Treme Brass Band, Leah Chase, James Andrews, and Lars Edegran's New Orleans Ragtime Orchestra, to name a few.

Throughout the festival for free seminars and discussions will take place, featuring a host of speakers, including recording industry icon George Avakian (Armstrong's producer and friend); Michael Cogswell of the Armstrong House and Archives; noted Armstrong scholar and winner of multiple Grammy Awards Dan Morgenstern; writer and Armstrong film collector Ricky Riccardi; Yoshio Toyoma, aka 'Satchmo of Japan,' who also performs with his Dixie Saints.

In addition, the traditional jazz mass will take place at St. Augustine Church on Sunday. August 4, 2011.


   

Monterey Jazz Festival 2011

Monterey Jazz FestivalMark your calendars! The 54th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival takes place September 16 - 18, 2011. Five hundred artists, including: Poncho Sanchez, Geri Allen, Idan Rach, Raul Midon & Richard Bona, Benny Green, Tia Fuller, Herbie Hancock, India Arie, Sonny Rollins, Hiromi, Dumpstafunk, Huey Lewis and the News, and Robert Glasper are schedule to perform on eight stages for three nights!

The 2011 Artist-in-Residence is Joshua Redman who will perform on Saturday, September 17, 2011 in the Arena/Dizzy's Den with James Farm, Aaron Parks, Matt Penman and Eric Harland. Nominated for two Grammys, Joshua Redman has recorded with Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, the Dave Matthews Band, Roy Hargrove, Roy Haynes, Paul Motian, MeShelle Ndegeocello, Dianne Reeves, Clark Terry, Cedar Walton, Stevie Wonder and Sam Yahel.
